What to Expect

Teachings

Each class will cover a fundamental aspect of mindfulness. Teachings are influenced both from the ancient roots of mindfulness meditation practice as well as from modern-day neuroscience.

Practice

There will be a meditation practice period during each class focused on the particular foundational aspect of mindfulness for that class. This offers an opportunity to practice what is being learned.

Community

While meditation alone is a powerful practice, doing so in a community offers benefits of connection. Each class offers discussion periods, offering the benefit of sharing experiences and learning from one another.

FAQ

Do I need prior experience with mindfulness to participate?

No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required. This class is specifically for beginners.

Is this class promoting a religious practice?

No, this class teaches a secular practice. Mindfulness meditation is rooted in ancient contemplative Buddhist practices, but mindfulness meditation can be practiced by anyone regardless of religious belief. It is simply learning to pay attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judgment.

I have a history of trauma. Is it safe for me to take this class?

This class promotes trauma-sensitive mindfulness, so great care is taken to support people with a history of trauma. This class is not therapy, but the teacher is a trauma-focused therapist who developed this class to be accessible to those with a history of trauma.

My mind never stops. I don't think it's possible for me to meditate.

There is a misconception that meditation is stopping the mind from thinking. That's just not the case. The mind actually never stops for anyone. What we're doing in mindfulness meditation practice is changing the relationship to thoughts, feelings, sensations so that we're not so carried away by them.
